Ukraine launched a US-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) attack on a bakery in the city of Lysychensk at around 1230 GMT on Saturday, Russian-backed officials said.

Emergency workers worked through the night to search for survivors in the wreckage of the Adriatic restaurant on Moskowska Street, where their officials said a bakery had been set up for civilians.

“Ukraine’s armed forces opened fire on a bakery in Lysychansk,” said Leonid Pasichnik, head of the itsĀ  installation in the Luhansk region, which is now controlled by Russian forces.

The bakery was full of civilians when the attack took place, Pasichank said. TheirĀ  Emergencies Ministry said that 10 people have been pulled alive from the wreckage.

But the ministry said the condition of four more people was “extremely critical” and that it was still searching for people.

Ukraine has not yet commented on the attack. Reuters was unable to immediately confirm what weapons were used in the attack.

In February 2022, Russia seized control of parts of eastern Ukraine after President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion, triggering the biggest land war in Europe since World War II.

Russia now controls about 18 percent of its neighbor – and considers the land part of Russia. Ukraine and the West say they will never accept the annexation of the region.

The bakery

The Foreign Ministry condemned the Ukrainian attack, saying the West should think about why its financial support to Kiev is being used to kill civilians.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that according to preliminary data, the attack was carried out using Western weapons.

“EU citizens should know how their taxes are being used – they are being used to buy and send lethal weapons systems to the Kiev government to use to kill citizens.”

From a file photo matching the design and color of the damaged building and a sign in the area, Reuters was able to confirm the location of the video, which was shared by the Russian Emergencies Ministry. This corresponds to a location on Google Maps identified as Adriatic Restaurant on Moskovka Street, Lysychansk.

However, Reuters was unable to independently confirm the date of the footage or any other details of the report, which was annexed by Russia in July 2022 after months of intense fighting.

According to Ukrainian officials, only a tenth of Lysychansk’s pre-war population of 110,000 remains in the city.

Although Ukraine retook some territory from Russian forces in 2022, its 2023 counteroffensive failed to make a significant impact on entrenched Russian lines, and debate continues among Kiev’s Western backers over how Ukraine should respond. Must fight.
