San Francisco 49ers Became the first team to win five Super Bowls when it won the Lombardi Trophy on January 29, 1995.

Well, 14 teams have won since then. Great cupand the Niners are not one of them.

San Francisco was just minutes away from winning Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday night, blowing a three-point lead with less than two minutes to play.

But Kansas City Chiefs with three seconds left to tie the game.

The Niners even kicked a field goal on their first possession of the period to take the overtime lead, needing a 4th-and-1 stop — but Patrick Mahomes Converted a first down, and then some more, to hit McCuller Hardman for the championship-winning touchdown.

But the drought continues with what is the bane of their head coach in Kyle Shanahan.

For the third time, Shanahan coached a team with a double-digit lead in the Super Bowl — yet he’s 0-3 in the big game.

Shanahan, of course, was his offensive coordinator. Atlanta Falcons When they went 28-3 against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

Patrick Mahomes joins elite company after being named Super Bowl MVP for the third time

Four years ago, the Niners had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter against these same Chiefs — but Kansas City won Super Bowl LIV, 31-20.

“There are no right words right now,” Shanahan said after the game. “It hurts, everyone understands it. We knew it would hurt if it came to that, but just proud of our boys.

“They put themselves out there, they worked their tails off, they played with a lot of things. It’s something we have to live with, but I know it’s something we can handle. . We’re all pretty disappointed right now. But if I’m going to lose to anybody, I want to lose to those guys.”

While the Niners wait for their drought to end, the Chiefs are in family territory, winning their third title in five years.
